I ran across Dunton Hot Springs on Cup of Joe last night. It is down in the San Juans, near my old stomping ground of Durango. I thought it would make a wonderful, kid-free vacation for me and T. And then I saw their rates. Whoa! Beauty comes with a price.

I just stumbled onto The League of Moveable Type, created by A Good Company. It is an open-source type foundry that raises the standards of free fonts. I love it when designers are lovers, not fighters. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work!

ps - all of you creatives out there ... A Good Company has also created a template portfolio site. The design is simple and straightforward, allowing your amazing work to speak for itself.

Phew. I feel like I have been in a deep deep fog. The hardest part of having three kids is the constant chaos that owns our house. I love it. And I would not trade it for anything. But now that the kids are back in school and H is sleeping more regularly a quiet morning is worth more than it ever was before. I am taking new jobs and trying to catch up on all of my blog inspiration. Three months can leave me feeling rusty. Here are a few things that I am liking:

This September issue of the NewYorker was incredible. It got me through any sort of post-partum I might have had.

I discovered this beautiful iPhone app on BloesemKids. Finally ... a well designed kid's app. Most of you already know it is not common. The illustrator of these adorable animals is Ryan Clark (who works for Forge in Dayton, OH). Be sure to check out his other animals (and get your free iPhone wallpaper).

And through GrainEdit I found local Denver designer, Justin Fuller. Goodness he is good. It is nice to see that great designers are everywhere.

I can kind-of knit. I wish that I had the time and patience to make this gorgeous blanket. Then I could curl up in it and read one of these books. All covers are designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith. Her sense of the nostaligic is wonderful. I feel like I just picked them up off of my grandmother's bookshelf ... but the colors aren't as faded.

My sense of what is "in style" has slowly diminished since I became a mom. Most fashion mags leave me feeling frumpy and way out of touch. So I am probably behind the eight ball in discovering Fly London. Oh my ... what awesome shoes. With a belly that looks like I am carrying a large globe, shoes are about all I can dream about until I get my bod back.

So far, I have not obsessed over iPhone apps. I have some, but I try to use my phone as a phone and planner. There are great kid apps but I cannot stand the tantrums when phone time is up. I recently found Hipstamatic on a mom-blog and am LOVING it. I rarely took pics with the phone because they were so crumby. But now the Hipstamatic app does all of the Photoshop work for me and I have these cool vintage-looking pics.

Moods in this house can change in a second. Tantrums are thrown when you least expect them. Our four year old boycotts any or all choices frequently. When we throw on some good tunes everything changes. It is like we all step into a natural rhythm and things just work. I found both of these links on SwissMiss. I wish so much that the song quotes on Music Philosophy came in paper poster form. If you only knew how many times I sing "you can't always get what you want" in a day.

D and I took a mother/son trip to The ATL last weekend. It was so fun to be with just the little man. He felt totally spoiled. It was wonderful to be with family, too. I was shocked to find out that Dad is checking his email. I have therefore made it a goal to find things that he likes and then send him links. Just this week I found these gorgeous moths and antique animal prints. He is really into the details of bugs. If you find anything, please send it on!

Our color teacher at The Circus was Sylvia. Most people who have attended an advertising school in Atlanta have had the pleasure of Sylvia's classes. She is tough. And really good. You learn color theory in a short six months and are up late many many nights working on her never ending projects.

Her final project had something to do with tribe symbols and patterns, contrasting colors, a "pop" color and something else. I found my piece of work when we moved to this house. It is a rug for a kid's room and since I now have kiddos, it sits on D's floor. The constellations are copied from H. A. Rey's The Stars: A New Way To See Them (an awesome book!). Who would have thought that this thing would actually come of use!

Sometimes it's the smallest gifts that are my favorite. My Mom gave me these ReproDepot notecards for Christmas. She had no idea I was a fan of their website. They sit on my dresser in their perfectly patterned box. I am afraid to use them!

With my Christmas presents made and my work "kinda-sorta" finished I have had some time to look for new inspiration. I have eaten up everything on Rifle blog (the work and words of Anna Bond out of Winter Park, FL). I was most excited to find the botanical posters. After seeing hugely overpriced geological posters at Scout Chicago I have longed for some artwork that looked like this. You can order them for a fraction of Scout's prices from Evolution NYC.

While doing a little bit of work for Bearings Guide (a great guide for Southern men regarding stuff to do and see and buy in Atlanta and surrounding areas) I found this old map of Atlanta. It fits their aesthetic, even if I don't know quite where to use it yet.

Another Rifle link, Leanne Shapton is an amazing illustrator. She has a great take on the "doodle" style.

I love the simplicity of these invites by Bird and Banner. And the yarn and button are such a sweet touch.

And finally, there is a new online design, art and photography magazine called Blanket. Every layout is gorgeous.

dad could do this

Many of you know that my Dad had a massive stroke a year and a half ago. He is doing amazingly well. He is walking. And drawing. And back to many of his regular day to day routines. Last time I visited he was still incredibly frustrated that he couldn't use his right hand or arm. Before the stroke his day job was being an attorney. But his passion is art. And he is an incredible artist. I featured his eggs on S+C the week of his stroke. He is still able to draw and paint with his left hand. But he would love to put down on paper (and eggs and wood and whatever else he can find) exactly what his mind sees. Despite the fact that his artwork is gorgeous, the perfectionist in him just can't cope with second best. So he is working on that right arm. And we keep praying that more miracles happen.

In my blog hiatus I had the wonderful pleasure of working with the ladies from Sticky Fingers Cooking. Not only are these women incredibly bright and fun to be with, they have a really really cool business: cooking classes for kids, recipes subscriptions for the mini-epicurious, cooking kits and loads of ideas to be revealed at a later date.

Design Mom had a birthday party for Olive last month with Sticky Fingers and S + C got to design the recipe cards. All Denver moms need to take advantage of this healthy, fun idea!

So I have been MIA for a while now. It is has been a HUGE adjustment having a moving baby + a feisty three year old. T got me a new computer which has saved me loads of time (no more rolling rainbow while any or all of my files load). The most fun I am having is going through this blog to find all of my old bookmarks. In one day I have found enough to fill the blog for months.

Two of my favorites today are from SwissMiss: The Lazy Designer's Guide to Success (do not overlook this one ... he is SO right in every area) and the Clients from Hell blog. Everyone in a creative business should frequent this blog just to make their day better.

And I also had to share some pictures from my rug project. EcoFiber is a member of GoodWeave, which certifies rugs "child-labor free". They have a beautiful traveling exhibition called Faces of Freedom. All of these amazing photographs were taken by U. Roberto Romano.

My childhood was magical - riding bikes everywhere, playing in creeks, building elaborate forts and obstacle courses. My partner in crime was Ashley Graves. Her family lived behind us and we spent so much time together that our Dads cut a hole in the fence, giving us quicker access to one another.

I have had the awesome opportunity to work with Ashley's husband, Stefan Graves Lanfer, designing his book The Faith of a Child. Stefan is the author of DadToday, a blog about (you guessed it) being a Dad and the adventures of his incredible family. Both Ashley and Stefan are amazing educated AND down to earth. Two attributes that don't always go together. Any Dad-to-be needs to read this book. It is real. And it is not full of a bunch of dos and don'ts. If anything, it lets all dads know that it is OK to go into parenthood totally clueless, to just go with it, and to enjoy every second.

Just finished a round of logos for ecoFiber custom rugs. They have exquisite, totally natural rugs that are made in Tibet. From fiber to dye to finished product, there is nothing chemical involved.

They chose the lower right logo ... all of their yarn is hand spun, looking similar to the line under their name. The idea below was what I needed the Islamic designs for. Those patterns might end up in some S+C collateral.

miller farms

Receiving another tip form our awesome new neighbors, this past Sunday we took a family trip up to Miller Farms. Up near Greeley, the farm allows you to pick all of the vegetables that you possibly can while riding around behind a tractor. Needless to say, it is a little boy's dream. Along with the farm equipment, digging in the dirt and farm animals, there is all sorts of old junk to climb on. They even created the Cars characters out of beat up (you guessed it) cars. Nothing like seeing Mater in real life!

I went into overwhelm when we got home. We probably have over 20 lbs of potatoes, onions, squash and carrots! Looks like we'll be having lots of soup this winter.

Oh Facebook. What would this new world be like without you? Many friends are fans of the new Lonny Mag, so of course I had to check it out. It is fabulous. Think "digital Domino". Great content (and a TON of it), direct links to products with just a click of the mouse, beautiful spreads. My only complaint is not being able to get a feel for the whole layout on my little laptop. Viewing works much better on a big screen.

I just stumbled onto this site featuring vintage travel ephemera from the 20s and 30s. All of it is gorgeous. And a large majority of the work looks like current designs that I love today. The main difference is that they actually had to cut and layer everything manually. None of this digital stuff.

Our awesome new neighbors introduced us to They Might Be Giants, Here Come the ABCs. We are up to over 70 plays on the above song in iTunes. My favorite is hearing D sing "an epidemic of missing letters". I love that the bizarreness of TMBG translates so well into kid's music. And I also love that they are using it for teaching. They have a Here Comes the 123s and a Here Comes Science.

All of the pictures in this Flickr set could be my grandparents. I need to start scanning my Mom's photo library.

I especially love in the picture above the look of the guy on the right. Makes me think that not much has changed in 80 years.

stratford hall plantation

An old family friend is on the board of directors at Stratford Hall. When she called for help with their advertising I had no idea what it was or why it was important. Set on cliffs overlooking the Potomac in northeast Virginia, Stratford Hall was the Lee family plantation. Robert E. Lee being the most famous. But his ancestors, Francis Lightfoot and Richard Henry, signed the Declaration of Independence. This property is yet another of the amazing historical gems in Virginia.

Like many other non-profits, Stratford Hall is hurting with this awful economy. Our friend Kathy has commissioned a friend to create beautiful, one of a kind jewelry in honor of the Lee crest (a squirrel sits at the top). Our ads feature the jewels and will run nationwide in gardening magazines.
